What is the difference between Calligraphy Inks and Indian Inks?

Calligraphy Inks are aqueous solutions of dyes.
The coloring dye, whether from chemical origin or extracted from natural resources, is present in dissolved form in the water. Inks are highly liquid, remain water-soluble even after drying and are more or less translucent and thus only have little or no coverage.
The lightfastness of conventional inks used for daily writing (aniline, fuchsin, eosin, etc.) usually is very poor. But there are also high quality and durable inks available (such as the ones offered here). Calligraphy Inks are suitable for writing and drawing on paper.

Indian Inks are pigmented liquids.

The pigments, e.g. Soot particles from lampblack or soot from oxygen-depleted combustion of selected woods, are held in suspense by various binders, such as natural or synthetic resins. There are also dry bar inks which are prepared on slates just before use (traditional Chinese ink).
Indian Ink usually is thicker than calligraphy ink and a bit sticky (except the Chinese ink), has a high opacity, good moisture resistance and usually is none-fading, even when exposed to direct sunlight.
Indian inks can be used on paper, but are also suitable for writing on wood or leather (after appropriate preparation of the ground).

Homemade calligraphy inks, with or without gloss pigment

These home made inks have a considerably better quality than standard inks made from aniline dyes. All inks have good non-fade properties. However only the iron gall inks can withstand direct sunlight.

All inks are also available in gift sets. As a prevention for knocks and spills we offer inkwell-holders.

Calligraphy Inks with gloss pigment

The 100 % non-fade gloss pigment has to be stired or shaken up before using. A small brush is most functional for this. After stiring the ink you can put it drop by drop on the pen nib instead of dipping it in. That's also a good way of mixing different colours. Glossy inks are also suitable for dark paper. Please note, that the colours on the screen may differ from the original colours.

→ Tipp: After shaking the bottle the gloss pigment is settling again quite fast. Put a small brush into the bottle to stir the ink with it and use the brush to put a drop of ink onto the nib. Thus it's also possible to mix different colours on the nib, which makes interessting colour gradients in the script.

Iron Gall Ink

Iron Gall Ink is 100% fade resistant and has extraordinarily good writing properties. The ink appears in a light grey first and will gradually darken until it is dark grey or black.
