Info

Glass Quills have been invented in the 18th century as an alternative to the goose quills, which have been used in masses by that time but had to be imported from abroad countries. During the 19th century the Glass Quills as well as the goosequills were superseded by the metal nibs, which were also very durable and could be produced by the industry at very low costs.

Nonetheless the Glass Quills are very popular even today and are used for normal writing as well as for drawing and scetching. A favourable attribute of the Glass Quill is that on its curled surface there is enough ink stored for the writing of many sentences, Also for children and for the lefthanded they are very easy to use.

Glass nibs were originally inserted into special wooden holders and were then interchangeable. With the brown glass nibs, changing them has proven difficult due to the varying thicknesses of the nibs, so I glue the nibs into the marbled holders with silicone. The yellow nibs are more uniformly shaped and therefore fit securely in the holder without needing to be glued.

Glass nibs are very hard and sturdy, but they can, of course, break if they fall onto the floor or if the tip is struck against the bottom of the inkwell. So dip them into the ink carefully! As long as the holder doesn’t fall off the table, the nibs can be used for years with almost no wear and tear.

Pen holder with glass pen points

The glass pen nibs offered here are antique and were manufactured in the beginning of the 20th century. I grind each nib by hand, one by one, to make them glide over the paper as smoothly as a good fountain pen.

The marbled penholders are individually handmade and the marbling therefore varies in design.
