As opposed to pointed nibs the ball pointed nibs have a bowl-like round point which makes them glide more easily over the paper.

In general the stroke width of a ball pointed nib is not as fine as that of a pointed nib, but it's more suitable for normal writing. Ball pointed nibs (or bowl pointed nibs) are also recommendable for children.

The many ball pointed nibs are differentiated (apart from by their shape) by their flexibility and the fineness of their nib tip. When the nib is pulled pressure can be applied to adjust the thickness of the stroke.

The more flexible the nib, the greater the range of thickness.But more flexibility also enlarge the nib's sensitivity to wrongly applied pressure; that is to say, when the nib is pushed under pressure.

To describe the flexibility of the nibs, I use the following terms:

  • High flexibility
  • Medium flexibility
  • Little flexibility
  • Hardly flexible
  • Not flexible
